Ginger's knife is an item found in the basement bedroom of the Fitzgerald sisters. It is an about 10 inch (20cm) long butcher's knife that has a black handle with white paint stains on it.
In this picture of the sisters' slide show, Ginger holds the knife in her right hand.
Ginger uses the knife to rehearse cutting her wrists for their suicide slide show. But ultimately decides that cutting her throat would look more effective. The knife then appears on some of the photos.
The knife reemerges when Ginger tries to cut her newly-grown werewolf tail off with it. Brigitte stops her and the knife lands on the bathroom floor. On the next morning, the knife sits on a pile of books. After Brigitte locks Ginger in the bathroom, she hides the knife in the top drawer of the dresser next to the bathroom door. On the evening of Halloween, when Ginger has transformed completely, Brigitte hides from her in the bedroom and takes the knife out of the drawer to defend herself. It turns out the Gingerwolf was already in the room. When jumping at Brigitte, Ginger gets stabbed and mortally wounded by this knife.
Significance[]
The knife starts out as a prop that facilitates Ginger's fictional death in the slideshow, symbolizing a death wish. Later it's an instrument to rid herself of a werewolf feature (the tail), symbolizing her rejection of her existence as a werewolf. Ultimately it becomes an instrument that facilitates both her actual death and her destruction as a werewolf, representing the synthesis of both the death wish and the end to her existence as a werewolf. There is also an ironic element to it as the knife was originally meant as an instrument to a merely fictional death and also because Brigitte at first hid the knife away to keep Ginger from hurting herself but then becomes the one that makes her death possible.
