Ginger Snaps Wiki

Ginger Ann Fitzgerald was an outspoken, death obsessed, adulthood loathing teenage girl infected by a werewolf. She was the older sister of Brigitte Fitzgerald and, over the course of the movie, turns into the main antagonist of Ginger Snaps.

She was accidentally killed when she attacked her sister in wolf form, landing on a knife Brigitte was holding. Later, she came back as an apparition (or possible hallucination) in Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed.

As a werewolf, Ginger had a pale white, almost hairless body, and was referred to as "Gingerwolf" in the film's credits.

History[]

Childhood[]

Ginger Ann Fitzgerald was the first child of Pamela and Henry Fitzgerald and the older sister of Brigitte Fitzgerald. She grew up in the town of Bailey Downs in Ontario, Canada. Growing up, the Fitzgerald sisters were very close to one another, never leaving each other's sight. Brigitte did almost everything that Ginger either did or asked her to do. Such as eating earthworms to enter their backyard playhouse. When they were eight-years-old, the girls made a blood pact with one another to be "united against life", swearing the oath, "Out by sixteen or dead on the scene, but together forever".

In addition to their close bond, the Fitzgerald sisters were introverted nihilists. They hated modern society and everything it represented. They were also unique in that by age fifteen, neither of them had yet experienced their first period. All of these factors made Ginger and Brigitte social outcasts and they received tremendous scorn from their peers.

In Ginger Snaps[]

Ginger comes up with the idea of a macabre slideshow showing the sisters in various death scenes in response to the class project, "Life in Bailey Downs". Especially the photographs of Ginger garner the attention of her male classmates, among them Jason McCardy. Mr. Wayne however, their teacher and the school's guidance counselor, is appalled by the morbid subject matter and demands to see the sisters after class. During the following Gym class, McCardy watches the girls' field hockey unit from the sidelines with his friends, with his attention focussed on Ginger, and decides to make a move on her. On the field the sisters dismissively take not and proceed to play their game of "Search and Destroy", where Brigitte makes up a mocking obituary for Trina Sinclair, which one of her friends overhears and snitches on them. The sisters notice this, and Ginger tells Brigitte she will "cover her" in the game. However, as Ginger is distracted by McCardy's hollering, Trina pushes Brigitte into the remains of a dog. After school, Brigitte and Ginger decide to kidnap Trina's dog that night and Ginger is asked out by Jason, who gets promptly rejected by her.

After dinner, they set out and find the mutilated corpse of another dog in a nearby park. While both try to move it to utilise it in their macabre plan, Brigitte notices blood on Ginger, thinking it is from the dog, but it proves to be from Ginger's first period. The Beast of Bailey Downs attacks, and drags her into the woods screaming. Brigitte follows them and tries to fight the beast by hitting it with her camera to release her gravely injured sister but she is knocked backwards with extreme force. As the sisters flee, they narrowly escape being hit by an approaching van driven by Sam, which hits and kills the Beast. Back at home Brigitte finds Ginger's wounds are already healing and urges her to go to a hospital. Ginger refuses, as she does not want their mother to find out.

On the next day, the sisters visit the drug store to buy tampons, while Ginger is plagued by menstrual pains. They meet Jason McCardy, who invites her to smoke a joint to cope with the pain. Despite rejecting him at first, she eventually accepts and joins Jason and his friends in Sam's truck to smoke. After a run-in with Trina and her dog, the sisters go to the school toilet where they notice that Ginger begins to grow hair from her wounds. Brigitte suggests that this could point to her having been attacked by a werewolf. An idea that Ginger outright rejects. At home, their mother, having discovered Ginger's bloody underwear, presents her a cake to celebrate her newly developed womanhood which makes the girl upset and leave the dinner table. Thinking that Brigitte told their mom about the period and annoyed by Brigitte's continued suggestion of werewolf involvement, Ginger puts their sisterly friendship on hold and in the following days and weeks grows distant to Brigitte, while pursuing a radical change in style and behaviour. Streaks of her hair started to turn silver and she starts to dress more provocatively, garnering the interest of the boys at school, especially Jason, who she starts to make out with.

After noticing that Ginger started to grow a tail and frightened by her general change in personality, Brigitte turns to Sam. Agreeing the Beast of Bailey Downs is a werewolf, he suggests a pure silver ring might present a possible cure.

Ginger makes out with Jason when her sister wants to talk to her. She continues to ignore her and drives off with Jason. Later in the evening they eventually have sex in his car, where she takes over the reins. On the way home, Ginger encounters the neighbours' dog Norman and is overcome by the urge to maul him. At home, Brigitte discovers her puking up bloody pieces of meat in the bathroom. For the first time in weeks the sisters are close again when Ginger convides in Brigitte and seeks her help, acknowlegding that "something is really, really wrong with" her. Brigitte persuades Ginger to have her navel pierced using the ring, but it will eventually prove ineffective.

On the following day, Ginger lets Brigitte help her to hide her ever longer growing tail. During gym class, Sam shows up and wants to offer Brigitte further advice. Ginger takes note and is reacts angry when Brigitte tells her that she sought Sam's help, suspecting him to only have sexual interests when dealing with Brigitte. Trina also noticed Brigitte's and Sam's apparent emerging relationship and grows jealous which leads to her knocking Brigitte over during a field hockey unit. Seeing this, Ginger instantly becomes furious and can't stop herself from violently attacking Trina, knocking her over and punching her repeatedly. Their gym teacher can hardly pull her away and sends her to the guidance office.

Later the sisters visit Sam at the County Greenhouse, who suggests a monkshood solution for the lycanthropy illness; and informs them that monkshood grows everywhere, however it only grows during spring. Ginger angrily tells him that they have no time, and accuses him of just wanting to have sex with Brigitte before storming out.

Before returning home, Ginger is seen by Trina as she takes away her dog Morley. Later, his collar and Ginger's bloodstained clothes end up on the bathroom floor in the basement as Ginger cleans herself up and shaves her legs in the bath tub. Later she notices Trina talking to Brigitte about her missing dog in the backyard. Ginger goes outside, grabs Trina and drags her inside the house while keeping her in a chokehold and taunting her. She then confronts Brigitte, accusing her of choosing Sam over her and rips off her navel piercing. Trina manages to break free but slips, hitting her head on the corner of the kitchen counter, and dies. The sisters narrowly avoid their parents seeing them as they put the body in the freezer, explaining the blood to be part of another series of death photos for the school project. Brigitte accidentally breaks off two of Trina's fingers trying to get the corpse from the freezer. While burrying the body in the tool shed, Brigitte is irritated about Ginger's display of amusement and apparent lack of remorse and tells her she can't go out anymore. Ginger remains defiant, but stays in their room for the next days, while Brigitte concocts a sharade, making school think Ginger is home sick and Pamela believe that she's in school.

During a family supper on the evening before Halloween, Pamela reveals that she knows that Ginger skips classes. Ginger storms off when confronted about it. Back in the basement, she tries to cut her tail off before Brigitte walks in and stops her, telling her about the dried monkshood that their mother had and how they can use it to cure her on the next day.

On the next morning, Brigitte locks Ginger after she went into the bathroom, take the monkshood and goes to Sam to make the cure. Sam asks if it is for Ginger. Brigitte admits the truth, and promises to go to the Greenhouse Bash party. In the meantime, Ginger breaks out of the bathroom and goes to the school, encountering Ben and Tim. She first asks them where Jason is and then if they come to the Greenhouse Bash that night. After that she flashes them. As Mr. Wayne sees this, she orders Ginger into the guidance office immediately.

While trying to track down Ginger, Brigitte is attacked by Jason (whom Ginger infected with lycanthropy through unprotected sex) and she defends herself by using the cure on him. She witnesses his immediate change in behavior, which proves the cure's success. She then proceeds to the school. As Brigitte arrives, a message on the PA asks her to go to the Guidance office. She knocks, and is dragged inside by Ginger who has killed the counselor and looks now visibly different. Ginger goes into another tirade about how Brigitte betrayed her by locking her up and going to see Sam. Brigitte calms Ginger down, and goes to find cleaning supplies. In the meantime, the Janitor walks in on Ginger hiding in the office. When Brigitte returns she encounters the janitor crawling down the hallway with his throat torn open, followed by an increasingly demonic Ginger who grabs him, taunts him and throws him into the walls. He survives, until Brigitte says they should call someone to help him, which incites Ginger to disembowel him with her hand. She then tells Brigitte that killing makes her feel ecstatic and starts to advance on her sister, suggesting to her that she should get infected too and join her. When Brigitte rejects her, she lashes out and kicks her in the ribs. She then tells her that she will go to see Sam now.

At the Greenhouse, the Halloween party is in full swing. Ginger has further transformed, now sporting completely white hair and forehead ridges. Ben and Tim greet her and compliment her look, mistaking it for a Halloween costume. She kisses Ben and continues through the greenhouse towards Sam's office. There, she starts to seduce him, managing to make him lay down on his bed and moving on top of him. But Sam ultimately rejects her and pushes her off the bed. As he approaches her, she breaks his arm. Brigitte arrives at the scene and offers Ginger to take her instead, but she refuses, claiming she doesn't know her anymore. In despair, Brigitte infects herself to regain her trust, whiles Sam pleads with her not to. Ginger calms down and the sisters leave. Outside Sam knocks Ginger out with a shovel. Brigitte and Sam then take her back to the Fitzgerald house where they plan to prepare more of the cure for Ginger.

Ginger fully transforms into a werewolf on the way home and escapes the van and trashed the place. Aware that she has transformed, Sam and Brigitte hide in the pantry as he makes the cure. When he goes to find Ginger, Ginger-Wolf drags Sam out of the pantry and mutilates him. Brigitte picks up the dropped syringe, and follows the blood trail downstairs. She tries to drink Sam's blood in an attempt to calm Ginger-Wolf, but chokes on it. Ginger-Wolf senses Brigitte's insincerity and kills Sam in front of her.

As Gingerwolf stalks Brigitte through the basement, Brigitte returns to the room where they grew up. Finding the knife that Ginger had been using to remove her tail, Brigitte holds the cure in one hand and the knife in the other. Ginger-Wolf lunges at Brigitte who accidentally stabs her with the knife. As the movie ends, Brigitte lays her head upon Ginger-Wolf, sobbing, listening until her breathing finally stops, at which point the credits start to roll.

In Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed[]

She appears to Brigitte as an apparition, saying that she is healing faster and the monkshood is not a cure, it only slows the transformation.

As Brigitte's healing begins to accelerate, so does her rate of transformation. Ginger continues to appear, taunting Brigitte as she experiences growing cravings for sex, and to kill, as did Ginger previously. During a group therapy session Brigitte daydreams about being instructed to lie on the floor and masturbate, however it is unclear if the masturbation was a fantasy, since the part about imagining death and blood is clearly in Brigitte's mind. Suddenly jolted back to reality by a vision of Ginger, she draws her hand to her face to reveal her palm covered in hair. Later, and very depressed, she takes her shard of glass and holds it to her throat while looking into the bathroom mirror. However, she does not kill herself.

Appearance[]

Ginger is a teenage girl with a slender body. At first she has auburn hair and wears very conservative, dark-colored, non-revealing clothing, including a large black jacket and several layers of clothing, adjacent to the "goth" style. However, as her werewolf transformation progresses, her hair becomes white, she sports fangs, her skin becomes paler, and she starts wearing more revealing, provocative, tight-fitting clothing. Her general style remains consistent.

Significance[]

Ginger is the older sister of Brigitte. As she takes the lead for the duo, she is also seen as the more controlling of the two, and she often directs Brigitte with her orders. When Ginger becomes helpless due to transforming into a werewolf, Brigitte steps up and takes the role of the caregiver. At the end of the first film, when Brigitte confronts Gingerwolf, Brigitte completely renounces her childhood pact with her sister, and refuses to take part in Ginger's desire that they both become werewolves. At that point, Brigitte will no longer only listen to Ginger. This can be meant as Brigitte "growing up" just as Ginger stated she was when she started hanging out with Jason.

Trivia[]

In dialogue, it is mentioned that Ginger "is almost 16" and Brigitte "just turned 15", implying there was only very little time after Ginger's birth before Pamela was pregnant again. In fact, this time must have lasted less 3 months, or the birthdays would overlap. If it lasted longer than 3 months, Ginger's birthday would lie before Brigitte's in the calendar. Which means there is only a 3 month window after Brigitte's birthday where Ginger's birthday can take place. This windows gets smaller the more time between Ginger's birth and Brigitte's conception has passed.

Kill count[]

Ginger killed a total of 5 times (2 dogs and 3 humans):

  1. Norman (dog)
  2. Morley (dog)
  3. Mr. Wayne
  4. Janitor
  5. Sam

Apocrypha[]

Several deleted scenes offer extended insights into Ginger's character and the history of her relationship with Brigitte. In "Let's Kill Them All!", Brigitte mentions that when they were 8 years old, Ginger broke the nose of a girl named Franny Beckwith who was friendly with Brigitte. Ginger then cut Brigitte's hand and made her swear that she would only ever love her. Adding more context to Brigitte's line "You wreck everything for me that isn't about you!" in the scene where she cuts her palm before infecting herself with Gingers blood.

In "PMS is the Least of Your Problems", Brigitte tells Ginger about Jason's attack on her in the storage room at school and Ginger becomes furious, vowing to kill him. This scene also illustrates that Ginger doesn't respond too well to being forced to stay at home and becomes stressed and riled up. In "Don't Touch My Sister!", Ginger is in Mr. Wayne's office on Halloween after she flashed Ben and Tim in the hallway. She apparently told the teacher that Brigitte locked her in the bathroom and he intends to talk to their mother about it on the phone, prompting Ginger to kill him with the remark, "Don't touch my sister!".
