Ginger Fitzgerald was a young woman that lived in 19th century Canada. After her parents drowned[1] while the family was travelling the Canadian frontier region, she and her sister Brigitte find themselves in the midst of a Native American prophecy involving werewolves with implications for the far future. Ginger is one of the main characters of Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning, being largely identical in personality and appearance to the character of the same name that lived over a hundred years later[2] in 20th century Canada in the town of Bailey Downs.
History[]
Together with her father Montgomery Fitzgerald who had a commission to find a passage through the mountains in the west, she and her family travelled the Canadian frontier region. When their boat was overturned, the parents drowned[1], leaving Ginger and her sister Brigitte as the sole survivors. On horseback they roamed the snowy wilderness in seek of shelter when they came across an abandoned Native American settlement where they encountered a seer who told them of a prophecy involving two sisters, red and black who have to kill a boy lest one of the sisters would end up killing the other. When following their horse after it bolted, Brigitte gets caught in a bear trap and while looking for help Ginger encounters a Native American hunter who leads them to the trade outpost Fort Bailey, whose leader Wallace Rowlands lets them stay at his allegedly dead son's room. During their stay, they learn that the fort is under siege by hellhounds and low on supplies. They also have to find out that the local Sergeant Major James and the fanatical Reverend Gilbert seem to be hostile towards them.
During her first night at the fort, Ginger wanders the main house after hearing a voice and ends up finding the supposedly dead son locked in a secret room. He looks grotesquely deformed and ends up biting her shoulder before he runs away. The sisters decide to leave the place and clandestinely go towards the main gate, unlock it and are confronted by James who immediately tries to stop them with full force, leading to him and Ginger squaring off, ready for a fistfight. When suddenly a hellhound assault on the fort breaks loose, they are forced to shut the gate again. When retreating back further inside the fort, Reverend Gilbert locks them in a cabin with one the creatures that managed to enter the fort. In the nick of time they are saved by the hunter who shoots the werewolf with an arrow.
In the remaining night, Ginger experiences a fever dream and wakes up in a bloodsoaked bed. When looking for help at Doc Murphy's office the sister's encounter a distressed Finn and learn that the doctor knows a method to use leeches to test people for lycanthropy. After the doctor shoots Finn dead when he tests positive, the sisters leave the office fearing Ginger to be found out and killed. In the corridor in front of her room, Ginger encounters the hunter who sees the wound on her shoulder and puts a healing paste on it before they both start making out. During the day, Ginger continues having feverish dreams and sees a young boy who then turns out to be the wolf-boy from the previous night. He pulls a strand of hair from her face, which later turns up near the body of Seamus, the fort's carpenter. Believing that Ginger has a connection to his death, a group of men around James apprehend her and drag her to Doc Murphy urging him to test her. Her sister Brigitte manages to force Wallace Rowlands to free Ginger, threatening to reveal Geoffrey's secret otherwise. Rowlands ends up killing the doctor and guarentees the sisters' safety.
Believing that she can stop the curse by killing the boy with her own hands, Ginger seeks out Geoffrey who is on the fort's cemetery mourning his mother, but she can't bring herself to kill him, leaving him to be discovered and rounded up by James and the other men. They confront Rowlands about his deception and the boy ends up dead, getting mercy-killed by his own father. Following his sons death, Rowlands is now no longer obligated towards the sisters and they both leave the fort. Outside they meet Milo who was expelled by James, following the death of his father Seamus. He agrees to lead them to the hunter's cave, where the sisters expect to find information about a cure to Ginger's curse. But on the way, Ginger's bloodthirst grows so strong that she kills Milo. At the cave they encounter the hunter and the Elder, who tells them that she should have have killed the boy before he bit her. She offers to give Brigitte a vision to find an answer. After she awakened she has to realize that Ginger killed the Elder in the meantime and ran away. Both Brigitte and the hunter go back to the fort to lure Ginger in so that Brigitte can kill her to fulfill the prophecy and stop the curse.
Later, when Ginger who has further transformed in the meantime, sporting yellow irises and white hair, arrives at Fort Bailey, James orders his men to let her in, planning to confront and kill her. He punches her in the face and kicks her around but she can bring him to let his guard down by teasing to tell him a secret and manages to slit his throat. She then opens the gate and lets the werewolves in who then kill the remaining men, except Rowlands who kills himself after taking a bite to the face and the hunter who gets killed by Brigitte who couldn't bring herself to kill her sister.
Outside in the snow in front of a burning fort, Ginger holds Brigitte in her arms. When Brigitte tells her that she's cold, Ginger replies that she's not and Brigitte cuts both their palms, puts them together and infects herself with lycanthropy.
Notes[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 It is unknown if the parents actually drowned. Brigitte didn't seem to know about this and reacts surprised after Ginger tells Wallace this story.
- ↑ It seems unlikely that Ginger or Brigitte are direct ancestors of their 20th century incarnations, as both turned into werewolves and could not have any human offspring.
