The full story spans all three films in the series and documents the rise of the lycanthropy curse and its consequences in a modern setting, following the events of Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald. The story begins with the third film in the series, which is the prequel, then continues with Ginger Snaps and concludes with the Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed.
Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning[]
Origin of the Modern Werewolf[]Each spring, a party from Fort Bailey, established as a part of the Northern Legion Trading Company, would travel to Hudson Bay to trade pelts for winter provisions, but in 1815 the party never returned. This is when the story begins, almost two hundred years before "Ginger Snaps". Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald are sisters who become lost with their horse in the Canadian wilderness, when they suddenly come across a seemingly abandoned camp that bears signs of a violent attack. They then notice an elderly Native American woman, who tells them she too had a sister once, but she perished "many summers ago." The woman gives the girls two necklaces with bird skulls on them that belonged to her and her sister. Brigitte wears her necklace, and she puts one on a hesitant Ginger. The woman speaks of them as the Red and the Black, and warns that they should "kill the boy, or one sister will kill the other." Suddenly the girls' horse is startled and flees; they try to chase it, but Brigitte's foot gets caught in a bear trap set by an Indian hunter. Ginger suggests to go back to the camp to find the old woman, but a frightened Brigitte asks her sister to not leave her. Ginger tells Brigitte to count to 100, and she promises will return before then. Ginger finds the camp to be empty, and she hears a wolf's howl and rushes back to her sister. Brigitte encounters a wolf, and a hunter arrives and reveals it to be his pet (just as Brigitte counts to 100) before Ginger returns. Ginger fails to use a stick knock out the Hunter, who uses a rope to lasso and tie up her. The girls view him as a threat, until he releases Brigitte and leads them to Fort Bailey where they take refuge. The sisters notice the Fort's main door has bloody scratches, several nailed crosses, and stakes facing outwards. They meet with the Fort's men, and Ginger claims they are the daughters of a trader who drowned, seeking passage East. The men there are suspicious of them, but the sisters are permitted to stay.
Fort Bailey[]The fort has been under siege by werewolves (known as hellhounds by the fort's residents) for some time. The sisters are taken to the doctor, Murphy, who inspects Brigitte's wound. Murphy applies a leech, surreptitiously testing to see if a werewolf bit her. As nothing happens to her, Wallace knows they're safe. The sisters are still treated with suspicion, particularly by Reverend Gilbert who views the girls as temptation and harbingers of sin. They are given a room that once belonged to Wallace's son, Geoffrey, and informed that he is dead along with Wallace's Indian wife. There are toy wolves and soldiers in the room, set up to be fighting each other. That night Ginger is awakened by a voice and goes to investigate. Wandering the dark, quiet corridors, she comes across a door, behind which she hears faint crying. Through cracks in the door, she discovers someone scuffling around with their back turned to her. She unbolts the door and enters a small, bolted unlit room. Through the light of the candle, Ginger discovers a young boy. She reaches out to him, who turns around and reveals a grotesque, severely disformed face. The boy bites her as he flees.
Secret Uncovered[]Ginger and Brigitte try to leave the fort but one of the men, James, confronts them. While Ginger and James are fighting, werewolves attack, killing one of their men. The sisters are led by Rev. Gilbert to an allegedly safe building, which actually contains one of the wolves. The sisters run up the stairs with the wolf chasing them, but the hunter appears and kills it. As Ginger and Brigitte return to their room Ginger's nose begins to bleed; A sign that she is infected.
The sisters discover that the boy was Wallace's son Geoffrey, whom everyone believes to be dead. As Ginger sleeps he sneaks into the bedroom and wakes her. She tries to touch him, but he runs away, taking a lock of her hair. Shamus, one of the men investigate the noise and is killed by Geoffrey. The others find the body with Ginger's lock of hair beside it and drag Ginger away while James holds Brigitte captive. Wallace arrives, dismisses James, and makes a deal with Brigitte; her sister's life in exchange for their silence about his son. Wallace and Brigitte find Ginger at the doctor's office, strapped to an exam table and held at gunpoint, about to be tested with a leech. When Wallace demands they release Ginger, Murphy ignores the order and approaches Ginger with the leech. Wallace shoots him dead, prompting the other men to leave.
The Prophecy[]Ginger is determined to kill the boy to lift the curse, but when she traps Geoffrey, he escapes and is then captured by the men. Wallace arrives and states his son is his concern, but James asks of Murphy, Owen, and Shamus, who had all died earlier. Wallace attempts to reconciliate with his son, but he does not appear to remember his father. The boy runs to the well, where the men aim their rifles at him, but Wallace kills his son himself, and the boy falls into the well. A sobbing Ginger laments to Brigitte that she was unable to kill the boy before Wallace did. Subtly, Ginger can be seen growing a set of fangs.
Release of the Curse[]
Back at the fort, Brigitte is tied and taken prisoner. Gilbert goes to her, telling her to beg forgiveness to save her soul; Brigitte curses, spitting in his face. Gilbert drags her out onto the parade square, and prepares to burn her alive. Brigitte begins counting to 100 in the hopes that Ginger will come back for her rescue. Gilbert is interrupted by the Hunter who shoots an arrow into Gilbert's hand. Ginger, wearing a dark cape covering her face, returns to the Fort for Brigitte, but James approaches Ginger and informs her that Gilbert is going to kill Brigitte, and James will deal with Ginger himself. He and his men punch Ginger to the ground.

Ginger Snaps[]

Bailey Downs is an ordinary small suburban community in Ontario, Canada. It is soon found out that the town is terrorized by a creature, nicknamed the Beast of Bailey Downs, that slaughters the neighborhood dogs. The days pass by mundanely, with few activity in sight.
Another Attack[]A small boy is playing in a sandbox when he uncovers and is intrigued by the bloodied paw of his pet dog, Baxter. His mother finds the eviscerated remains of the family pet and grows hysterical. Scooping up the child, she runs out into the street screaming, "It killed our dog!" The elderly neighbors and neighborhood children give a brief glance, but don't give second thoughts as they go back to playing street hockey and watering the garden, unfazed by another killing.
Twisted Sisters[]
Across the street, the Fitzgerald sisters live in their own world, also feeling indifferent to the killings. Ginger and Brigitte Fitzgerald are inseparable sisters who never leave each other's sites and do everything together. In their own introverted paradise, they shun the outside world, modern society, and everything it represents. However, to others, they are looked down as social outcasts.
Brigitte carries an orange extension cord and a can of gasoline from the garage as she sees the mother crying out. Annoyed, she carries the supplies downstairs to their bedroom. On the bed is Ginger, with a knife to her palm. In the safety of the bedroom, the sisters talk about their pending "suicides." Ginger extends her palm to Brigitte, saying "together forever," and a hesitant Brigitte extends hers and clasps palms with Ginger, replying, "united against life as we know it,"
Ginger Strikes[]The sisters present their slide show to their class, and while most of the students get a kick out of the presentation, including Jason McCardy (who asks to see scenes of Ginger again) their teacher, Mister Wayne (who is also the school guidance counselor) is sickened. He instructs each of them to report to his office after class.
The Beast Strikes[]That evening, the girls return home for an uncomfortable family dinner with their parents Pamela and Henry Fitzgerald. Ginger complains about a persistent pain in her lower back and Pamela wonders if it might be cramps. She knows that her daughters are unique in that neither of them have experienced their first period yet. She tries to offer words of comfort, but the irritable Ginger has no patience for her. After a terse exchange of words, Ginger and Brigitte leave the dinner table and decide to blow off some steam by taking a stroll in the neighborhood park.
Sam[]The following day, Ginger and Brigitte go to the local drug store to buy some tampons. Ginger's cramps are overwhelming and she can barely walk. When they reach the checkout counter they see Jason McCardy. Jason recommends "a good toke" to take the edge off. Ginger at first disagrees, but then changes her mind split second. Brigitte elbows her sister to get her act together, but Ginger elbows back. Ginger goes with him and Brigitte finds her later smoking marijuana with Jason and his friends Ben and Tim in the back of Sam's van. When Sam returns to his vehicle, however, he expresses his disapproval of their actions and for raiding his van and kicks them all out. Brigitte grows concerned over her sister's sudden confidence.
The Sister's Divide[]
Before school, Ginger and Brigitte go outside to talk about all of the strange things that are going on. Trina Sinclair approaches them with her dog. She has a fondness for Sam, but Sam has no interest in her. Trina's dog begins barking at Ginger, and Trina tries to hold him back. Ginger gets tired of listening to the animal, and in a fit of rage, kicks it in the face. The enmity between Trina and Ginger deepens.
The New Ginger[]Brigitte begins an independent study to find out more about werewolves and how to treat them. However, she comes up short, where most sources show werewolves as ruthless and must be destroyed, and besides, most were depicted in cheesy werewolf movies. Meanwhile, Brigitte discovers evidence of Ginger's transformation in the restroom, seeing razors covered in excess hair.
A Shocking Discovery[]That evening, Brigitte watches Ginger as she sleeps. She notices that she is now growing a vestigial tail. Horrified, she makes plans to visit Sam. She meets with him at the Greenhouse where he works and bridges the discussion about lycanthropy. Brigitte implies that she is the one suffering from the curse, not Ginger. Sam tells her that he read how some metals like silver may purify the blood. He gives her his silver earring and tells her to put it to the test.
The Experimental Treatment[]Brigitte goes to find Sam for help. He denies the absurd claims that Brigitte was turning into a werewolf, but she tells him to not call a freakshow if she tells him the specific changes. Sam discusses how "the ancients once thought that metals purified the blood," but Brigitte is suspect at the mythology. Sam gives Brigitte a silver earring and tells her to try it. That evening, Brigitte disinfects a needle and prepares the procedure. She uses Sam's silver earring to give Ginger a naval piercing, but when Ginger inquires where she got it, interestingly, Brigitte lies and says she "just found it," further breaking from the sisters normally telling each other the truth about everything. The procedure is painful, and Ginger is seen growing fangs while twitching in pain. The naval piercing is completed, and Ginger replies that she feels "wicked." However, Brigitte soon finds that the treatment doesn't produce the results that she had hoped for. Ginger is still slowly changing into a werewolf.
Monkshood[]The next day at school, Jason McCardy meets with his friends on the bleachers near the hockey field. There are scratches all across his face and blood stains on his trousers. He brags about how Ginger Fitzgerald "rocked my world." On the hockey field however, things become a bit more violent. Trina is still furious at the Fitzgerald sisters for their recent altercations, and she pushes Brigitte onto the ground. Ginger snaps and leaps upon Trina, brutally pummeling her in the face. Ms. Sykes separates them, and Ginger is sent to the guidance counselor. While Brigitte is standing outside Mister Wayne's office waiting for Ginger, she sees Jason McCardy walk by. She notes the blood stains on his pants and knows that Ginger has infected him with the curse of lycanthropy.
Brigitte convinces Ginger to visit Sam, but Ginger believes Brigitte has started a relationship with Sam and just wanted to see him. When they arrive at the Greenhouse, Sam researches the lore of lycanthropy and discovers that a perennial plant called monkshood might possess properties that could counteract the curse. Ginger's anger grows with each passing moment and she dismisses everything that Sam says. She even accuses him of trying to seduce Brigitte and cites that she is only fifteen. Brigitte forces Ginger to leave, to which she replies that she won't protect her from Sam. Brigitte rolls her eyes at Sam who states that he does not think of her that way.
Trina's Death[]That night, as Brigitte is walking home by herself, she unexpectedly meets Trina, who came over to the Fitzgerald house carrying a dog leash and sporting a band aid across her forehead, ready to confront the sisters. She yells at Brigitte and accuses Ginger of stealing her dog. Ginger runs out of the house, grabs Trina in a headlock and drags her inside. Brigitte tries to get her to stop, but Ginger keeps antagonizing the girl. During the scuffle, Trina frees herself and grabs a knife, forcing Ginger back. However, Trina slips and cracks her head on the corner of the countertop, instantly killing her. Brigitte and Ginger hear their parents returning home, and they hide Trina's body in the freezer. They go through the motions of filming another one of their "death movies" for extra credit as a means of explaining all of the blood on the floor. Pamela goes down to the freezer to put up some meat, but Brigitte insists on helping. Still in the kitchen, as Henry looks at Ginger mortified, Ginger wipes her finger through the blood, claiming it is corn syrup. Brigitte stops her mother just in time as she opens the freezer but does not see Trina's body. Brigitte asks her mom, "what do guys want?" and a pleased mother drops the meat in the freezer and closes the lid without a second glance.
Suspect[]Several days pass, and at school, news quickly spreads about Trina Sinclair's disappearance. As an announcement is made over the PA system by a staff worker, Brigitte forges a note from her mother, excusing Ginger from class. Jason McCardy comes up to her and pushes Brigitte into a supply closet. He is grotesque, suffering from physical transformations, and he demands to know what is happening to him. Fortunately, the school janitor arrives, and Jason is forced to leave Brigitte.
Halloween[]
The next morning, Brigitte locks Ginger in the bathroom. She says that she needs to find a solution and that she is doing this before Ginger can hurt herself or anyone else. She takes the monkshood to Sam who warns her that he has no idea if this theoretical cure will work- the results could even be fatal. He also reveals that he knows that Ginger is the one suffering from lycanthropy, not Brigitte. Brigitte convinces him to help, and Sam boils the Monkshood down into an extract and aspirated it in a syringe.
Reconciliation[]A Halloween party is being held at the County Regreening Greenhouse where Sam works. Ginger shows up, but by now her hair is completely white and she looks only remotely human. Most of the revelers think that she's just wearing a cool Halloween costume. She finds Sam and tries to force herself upon him.
Gingerwolf[]As Sam and Brigitte drive back home, Brigitte is seen slightly feverish, indicating the werewolf infection is taking place. Ginger fully transforms into a werewolf on the drive. When Sam and Brigitte arrive at home, they prepare to unload Ginger, who escapes from the van. Frightened, Sam tells Brigitte to turn back, but Brigitte is resolved to cure her sister, and they enter the house; fortunately, Pamela nor Henry are anywhere in sight. As they sense the "Gingerwolf" lurking about, Brigitte and Sam hide inside the pantry, and he begins preparing another mixture of monkshood. Sam wants Brigitte to take it first and then to run away together, but she tells him no, insisting that she needs to cure Ginger first. Brigitte is weakened from the werewolf infection, and Sam volunteers to find Ginger; out of nowhere, she leaps upon him, mutilating him, and drags him away.
Gingerwolf's Death[]Brigitte runs away and the Gingerwolf chases after her. She manages to kick a hole through the plaster wall of the basement and scrambles through the crawlspace back to her and Ginger's bedroom. The werewolf claws through the walls, and Brigitte prepares to defend herself by finding the knife that Ginger first used when trying to remove her tail. Finally facing Gingerwolf, Brigitte pleads that she is her sister. When the werewolf fails to acknowledge her, Brigitte announces that she will not die in the room with Ginger. Hearing this, whatever human spirit left in Gingerwolf is let go, and Ginger fully lets the werewolf instincts take over. The werewolf lunges at Brigitte and into her knife, stabbing Ginger in the chest. In shock, Brigitte takes a moment to recover. Realizing what she's done, with tears forming in her eyes, she looks up at the bedroom wall, filled with pictures of memories of the sister's adventures. Brigitte craws to Ginger and lays her head upon her dying werewolf sister's chest, sobbing, listening until its breathing finally stops. |
Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed[]

Set sometime after witnessing Gingerwolf's death, Brigitte Fitzgerald fights the effects of the lycanthropy that transformed her sister into a werewolf.
On the Run[]Brigitte shaves all over her body, cuts her arm with a scalpel, then injects herself with doses of monkshood. Brigitte is then seen in a library, where the librarian Jeremy clumsily hits on her. When she goes to check out her books, her library card has too many fines owing, and she walks out, leaving the books behind.
Brigitte shoots a deadly second dose of monkshood, and immediately after, Brigitte senses the presence of the male werewolf that has been stalking her, whose identity is unknown. She hastily packs and opens the door to find Jeremy with her library books. However, the additional dose has pushed her into toxic shock. Jeremy gets her in his car and is about to drive her to a hospital when the driver side window is smashed, and the werewolf drags him from the car. Brigitte stumbles down the street and collapses in the snow.
Time for Rehab[]She wakes up in a combination rehab clinic for drug abusing girls and chronic care patient facility, located in the only operational section of a large, old hospital. She meets Alice, the facility's director, and a curious, young in-patient named Ghost. Ghost's curious phrases causes Brigitte to suddenly panic and attempt to escape, but she fails to do so. She is taken back by Tyler to her room. When delivered to the clinic's director Alice, she pleads to be released, but is refused. She does, however, manage to palm a piece of glass so she can continue to measure her healing rate when Alice isn't looking and lights a smoke. That night, Tyler, the same worker at the clinic who cornered Brigitte when she tried to escape, visits Brigitte at night and offers her some monkshood in exchange for sexual favors. She refuses, but Tyler tells her he will not give her the monkshood until she accepts his terms. Lycanthropy Lament[]As Brigitte's healing begins to accelerate, so does her rate of transformation. Ginger continues to appear, taunting Brigitte as she experiences growing cravings for sex, and to kill, as did Ginger previously. During a group therapy session led by Dr. Brookner, Brigitte daydreams about being instructed to lie on the floor and masturbate; however, it is unclear if the masturbation was a fantasy, since the part about imagining death and blood is clearly in Brigitte's mind. Suddenly jolted back to reality by a vision of Ginger, she draws her hand to her face to reveal her palm covered in hair. Later, and very depressed, she takes her shard of glass and holds it to her throat while looking into the bathroom mirror. However, she does not kill herself.
Ghost's Discovery[]During this time, Brigitte is shadowed Ghost, the granddaughter of Barbara, a severe burn victim who is a patient there. Ghost eavesdrops on Alice in the staff lounge that Brigitte injects Monkshood. Curious about it, Ghost goes through her clandestinely hidden comic book collection and realizes Brigitte's secret. Ghost slips Brigitte a comic book containing the werewolf story. She begins to question her about lycanthropy, and notices Brigitte's ears have begun to grow pointy, Brigitte takes the glass, telling Ginger that she will not die, and cuts off the pointed part of her ear, flushing it down the toilet. Shortly after, Ghost tries to slip monkshood to Brigitte, but is foiled by Tyler. The following night, in despair at her rate of transformation, Brigitte allows Tyler to inject her. The Stalker Arrives[]By now, it is apparent the werewolf has found her again. After Ghost's dog Rocky is found dead and mutilated, Brigitte asks her where the corpse was found, and is told that it was found in the disused crematorium section of the hospital. Upon learning this, Brigitte says she must get out. Ghost offers to show her an escape route, but insists she be taken with Brigitte.
Escape[]Brigitte escapes to the disused crematorium, in the basement, by crawling through air vents following Ghost's trail marks. There, Brigitte meets Beth-Ann who is high on drugs that she just received in exchange for sex with Tyler. Beth-Ann is killed and dragged away by the werewolf. Shortly after, Ghost arrives and says the escape route is where Beth-Ann was dragged away to. Brigitte and Ghost proceed, but are separated as the werewolf attacks. Clashing with the beast, Brigitte's leg is broken by the werewolf, but her transformation is so advanced, she heals immediately, and makes her escape after burning the beast in the crematorium. Refuge[]Ghost drives them to a gas station in the clinic car, where Brigitte tends to her wounds. They then drive to Barbara's house and sleep. Ghost explains how Barbara got burned, she tells Brigitte that Barbara fell asleep with her bedtime cigarette.
Brigittewolf[]Ghost tricks Brigitte into thinking Tyler abused her. Brigitte locks Tyler outside, and he is killed by the werewolf. Alice arrives, and is attacked by Ghost, wielding Barbara's hunting rifle. Brigitte figures out that Barbara didn't smoke, she aggressively keeps Ghost against a wall and argues with her, realizing it is likely Tyler didn't abuse Ghost and that Barbara was burnt by Ghost, but is stopped by Alice holding the rifle point-blank to the base of her skull. Alice begins to take Ghost, but is advised not to go outside. The werewolf then howls and breaks a nearby window, and Alice takes Ghost to the attic with her to seek refuge from Brigitte and the werewolf. Brigitte's transformation is almost complete, when the werewolf enters the house. She lures him into a room, and, when Ghost distracts the werewolf by dropping a heavy curling stone, Brigitte stabs him. The werewolf bites her on the arm. They struggle and after she repeatedly bashed its head with a curling stone, they fall into the basement, and the werewolf is killed on a set of mattress springs holding a wide variety of sharp objects.
Epilogue[]Ghost is shown illustrating a comic page of herself as a powerful warrior with a werewolf pet. Ghost narrates that Brigitte is getting stronger in the basement and is waiting to be unleashed on Ghost's enemies. A doorbell is heard, and Ghost goes downstairs to welcome home Barbara. |
